While any restaurant may participate in the Healthy Dining program, featured menu items must fall within certain limits for calories and fat (total and saturated). The nutrition criteria also encourage use of lean proteins, fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and trans fat-free and non-fried items. These recommendations:
- Are consistent with the fundamental nutrition principals advocated by most health professionals and health organizations.
- Will be helpful to a large percentage of Americans, who have nutrition and weight related goals.
- Allow for a variety of menu items to be featured from all types of restaurants, sometimes through a special request – asking for a simple modification in the recipe (e.g., less cheese, steamed instead of fried).
